Majoli Gains at Bol Ladies Tennis
BOL, Croatia (AP) _ Iva Majoli of Croatia, the 1997 French Open champion, defeated Zuzana Heidova of the Czech Republic 6-2, 6-4 in the opening round of the Bol Ladies Open Tuesday.
Making up for the absence of Croatian favorite Mirjana Lucic, Majoli hit with authority and accuracy on the red clay, her best surface.
Lucic vaulted to prominence as a 15-year-old in 1997, winning the title in her debut tournament, then defending her crown last year. Lucic declined to play this year because of her father, who reportedly abused her and the family.
One-third of the competitors who originally planned to play also withdrew, fearing its proximity to the NATO military campaign in Yugoslavia.
Fifth-seeded Sarah Pitkowski of France, seeking her second straight title, defeated Janette Husarova of Slovakia 6-2, 6-2.
