Overtime Has Not Been Kind to the River Hawks
LOWELL -- Last weekend the UMass Lowell hockey team outshot both New Hampshire and Northeastern University.
The River Hawks were dominant in four of the six regulation periods, but they managed only one Hockey East point. Both games went overtime. Following a 2-2 tie with UNH at home, the River Hawks fell 5-4 at Northeastern.
UML is 1-8-4 in its last 13 overtime games. The River Hawks were 1-5-0 last season in OT games, tying for the worst winning percentage in the nation. This season they are 0-2-1 and the only team in the country with more than one overtime loss.
“We have to look at it because it’s always something you want to improve upon,” head coach Norm Bazin said.
UML (4-5-1, 1-3-1) is tied for eighth place in Hockey East. With two OT goals last weekend, Bazin’s team would be tied for third.
UML has only won one overtime game since a Joe Gambardella tally defeated Yale in the first overtime of an NCAA Tournament game in Albany, N.Y., in 2016.
“I don’t know what it is with us in overtime,” junior forward Kenny Hausinger said. “It might be a mindset thing at this point because we’ve lost so many in overtime.
“Someone has to step up in those instances whether it’s me or Ryan Lohin or a younger guy. We’ve got to find a way to win those games. It’s almost unacceptable. When you’re losing those games consistently, you’re losing those points. We do need to be better there.”
SCOUTING UCONN: The Huskies (4-4-1, 2-3-1) feature an international roster with five European players, including freshman Jachym Kondelik, a 6-foot-5, 230-pound forward from the Czech Republic. Kondelik leads UConn in scoring with 10 points, all on assists.
UConn hosts Friday’s game at 7 p.m. UML will entertain the rematch Saturday at 5 p.m.
“From what I can see they’re a quick team. We’ll have to play with pace if we hope to have a chance,” Bazin said.
LOOSE PUCKS: Through 10 games, Bazin said he’s been happy with his team’s effort except during a 4-1 loss to Northeastern on Oct. 26.
“I’m not sure the effort has been inconsistent,” he said. “The execution and the results perhaps, but you’ve got to keep the big picture in mind with a young group. They’re going to hinge on everything you say. For me, the effort has been there.”
