CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. (AP) _ Nine cars of Amtrak's Sunset Limited derailed early Friday, shutting down a major rail line in the desert east of Los Angeles but causing no serious injuries.

There were three minor injuries, said Ray Dampier of the Riverside County Fire Department. Amtrak spokesman Cliff Black said the injuries were minor bumps. The westbound train from Orlando, Fla., to Los Angeles was carrying 216 passengers and 18 crew members.

Three of the Sunset Limited's passenger cars, a private passenger car and five freight cars jumped the track near Interstate 10 in the northeast area of the city, said Mark Davis of Union Pacific, which operates the track.

The cars remained upright. Passengers were taken by bus to Los Angeles.

The site is just east of Palm Springs and about 110 miles east of Los Angeles. The rail line was expected to reopen late Friday.
