Southwest Missouri St. 86, Maryland 82
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) _ Tonya Baucom made a follow shot with 31 seconds left to break a tie and lift Southwest Missouri State to an 86-82 victory over Maryland in the second round of the NCAA Midwest Regional women’s basketball tournament Saturday night.
The Lady Bears (23-8), who have won five straight, will meet the winner of the Texas-Louisiana Tech game Thursday night at Nacogdoches, Texas. It was the first home loss in eight NCAA Tournament games for Maryland (22-8).
After Monica Bennett tied the score 82-all for Maryland on a 3-pointer with 54 seconds left, Baucom rebounded a miss by Secelia Winkfield to give the Lady Bears the lead for good. Melody Howard then made a pair of free throws to put the game away with 7.4 seconds left to play.
Midway through the second half, Tina Robbins scored eight straight points for Southwest Missouri to snap a 50-all tie with 12:36 left to play. Southwest Missouri increased the lead to 68-57 with 7:45 remaining before Maryland went on a 14-3 run to tie it 71-71 with 3:26 left on a basket by Jessie Hicks.
Robbins led the Lady Bears with 26 points, 17 in the second half, while Howard added 24 points and Baucom 18 points.
Malissa Boles paced Maryland with 27 points; Katrina Colleton added 18 points and Hicks had 12 points.
