SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) _ A school minibus smashed head-on into an oncoming truck on a road in central Brazil, killing 10 children and two adults, police said.

The children, ages 12 to 15, all died at the site of the accident near Uberlandia, 360 miles northwest of Sao Paolo, traffic police said. The Folha news agency reported the driver and a passenger in the truck were taken to hospital with serious injuries but the driver died on the way.

Witnesses said the accident was caused when the minibus swerved to avoid a pothole in the road , the agency said. Other media reported the minibus swerved after one of its tires blew out.

Soldiers from a local army barracks were called in to help remove the bodies from the wrecked minibus.
