Man pleads guilty to using hammer to attack housemate
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — A Massachusetts man charged with using a hammer to attack and seriously injure his housemate has pleaded guilty in the middle of his trial.
The Republican newspaper reports that 56-year-old Charles Bickel, of Springfield, was sentenced Monday to up to 8 ½ years in prison.
He pleaded guilty last week after and several witnesses had testified.
Prosecutors say Bickel and the victim rented rooms in the same house. The victim became concerned because Bickel had not been seen in several days, so he broke the lock on Bickel’s door, which enraged the defendant.
The victim suffered a fractured skull and a fractured kneecap in the November 2016 attack and still has short term memory problems.
Bickel’s attorney blamed the attack on his client’s drug use and said he is remorseful.
