Sons and Daughters Find Mixed Results in Following Father’s Footsteps
Undated (AP) _ It was like father, like son, for a Udall, a Taft and a Mondale. But a Chafee, a Chiles and a Mosbacher found a famous last name is no guarantee of election.
A bumper crop of political offspring ran on state and local ballots Tuesday - including two sons of former Democratic vice presidents in Minnesota, both of them successful. Ted Mondale, son of Walter Mondale, ousted Republican state Sen. Phyllis McQuaid in his first bid for office; Hubert H. Humphrey III easily won a third term as the state’s attorney general.
Here are other younger-generation winners and losers:
-Republican Robert Taft II was elected secretary of state in Ohio, ousting Democratic incumbent Sherrod Brown. He is the great-grandson of President William Howard Taft and the son and grandson of U.S. senators.
-Democrat Tom Udall won a race for attorney general in New Mexico. His father is former Arizona Rep. and Interior Secretary Stewart Udall.
-Two young Kennedys were returned to office: Joseph P. Kennedy II, son of the late Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, won a third term in Congress from Massachusetts; Patrick J. Kennedy, son of Sen. Edward Kennedy, was unopposed for a second term in the Rhode Island House.
-George Wallace Jr., son of the former longtime Alabama governor, coasted unopposed to a second term as the state’s treasurer.
-While his father, Lawton Chiles, was winning the Florida governorship, Ed Chiles lost his race for a Florida Senate seat to Republican John McKay. But the younger Chiles received 48 percent of the vote in a heavily Republican district on the state’s southwest coast and said: ″I feel like a winner.
-Lincoln D. Chafee, son of Republican Sen. John H. Chafee, was defeated by Democrat Charles Donovan in his bid for mayor of Warwick, R.I.
-Rob Mosbacher, son of Commerce Secretary Robert Mosbacher, fell short in his race for lieutenant governor of Texas. He was beaten by Democrat Bob Bullock.
Two political daughters met with varying results:
-Democrat Kathleen Brown, whose father is former California Gov. Pat Brown and brother is former Gov. Jerry Brown, ousted the state’s appointed state treasurer, Republican Thomas Hayes.
-Republican Mary Mead, whose father, Cliff Hansen, was a former Wyoming senator and governor, lost to the state’s current governor, Democrat Mike Sullivan.
