MU men’s soccer beats Ohio State
DAYTON, Ohio — Kelan Swales scored in the second minute of play Friday and Marshall University knocked off Ohio State, 1-0, in the Dayton Classic men’s soccer tournament.
Swales took a cross from Carlos Diaz-Salcedo inside the 5-yard box and scored at 1:53 of the match. Marshall goalkeeper Paulo Pita recorded five saves in a shutout of the Buckeyes (1-2-0).
Marshall (2-1-0) has another game in the tournament at 7 p.m., Monday against Dayton. The host Flyers (1-0-1) played Friday night against Milwaukee.
HUNTINGTON — Marshall defeated Eastern Kentucky, 2-1, in a Friday women’s soccer match at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex.
After a scoreless first half Eastern Kentucky (3-2-0) took a 1-0 lead on Idalys Rea’s goal at 51:41.
Marshall junior Farah Abu-Tayeh put Marshall up, 2-1, at 58:35 off a feed from her twin sister, Marah Abu-Tayeh. A goal by Marah Abu-Tayeh at 61:08 pulled the Herd (1-2-1) even at 1-1.
Senior Night was observed for Marshall players Jayne Lawman, Kylie Slusser, Ashley Seltzer, Peyton Miller, Julianna Smith, Jenna Zuzolo and Courtney Andrews.
The Herd’s next match is 1 p.m. Sunday at Ohio University.
CHICAGO — Marshall’s volleyball winning streak reached three matches Friday with victories against Georgia State and Furman at the Rambler Challenge hosted by Loyola Chicago in Gentile Arena.
Marshall blanked Georgia State (2-2), 25-20, 25-19, 25-21.
Sophomore Ciara DeBell led the Herd with 12 kills, seven digs and five blocks. Joelle Coulter and Lauren Mattmuller both had seven kills. Amber Weber had 20 digs.
The Thundering Herd (3-3) defeated Furman (0-5), 25-23, 9-25, 25-21, 19-25, 15-8.
Debell was the leader again with 16 kills and Joelle Coulter followed with 14. Weber contributed 27 digs.
Marshall and the host Ramblers play a 3 p.m. Saturday match.
