Putin Visits Yeltsin at Residence

May 10, 2001

MOSCOW (AP) _ Russian President Vladimir Putin met with his predecessor Boris Yeltsin at a country residence outside Moscow on Thursday. The two discussed Yeltsin’s recent geese-hunting trip, news reports said.

Yeltsin and Putin were shown walking slowly on a path lined by trees on Russia’s RTR television news, but there was no sound. The meeting lasted about an hour, the report said.

Yeltsin, 70, suffered repeated illnesses in recent years and was hospitalized for more than a month with pneumonia earlier this year.

In April, he canceled an official meeting with Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko.

During his final years in office, Yeltsin’s speech was slurred and he appeared only rarely in public. Yeltsin resigned on Dec. 31, 1999, turning the reins of power over to Putin, who won election three months later.
