ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) _ Cincinnati’s Carlos Almanzar, making his first major league start for the injured Jose Rijo, left in the first inning of the Reds’ game against the Texas Rangers Monday night with an injured finger.
Almanzar was hit on the right ring finger when he tried to field a ball hit by Alex Rodriguez. The ball glanced off his hand and into center field.
After testing his hand with some warmup pitches, Almanzar remained in the game. But he left after walking Juan Gonzalez and allowing an RBI single to Rafael Palmeiro, and was taken to a hospital for X-rays.
Scott Sullivan replaced Almanzar, who had 136 relief appearanaces before his first start. Herbert Perry then hit a three-run homer to give the Rangers a 4-0 lead.
