9-year-old boy dies in Santa Fe crash
SANTA FE -- Santa Fe Public Schools has confirmed that a 9-year-old elementary school student died in a car crash Friday morning.
SFPS Superintendent Veronica Garcia said Gonzales Community School fourth-grader Jeremiah Archuleta died after the car he was riding in collided with an SUV at the intersection of St. Francis Drive and Hickox Street around 7:30 a.m.
Santa Fe Police spokesman Greg Gurule said Jeremiah’s father was transported to University of New Mexico Hospital and is in critical condition.? A mother and daughter in the SUV are expected to be OK.
Gurule initially said that Jeremiah’s mother and sister were also in the car and sustained injuries, but he later said that was not correct.
Police worked the crash scene throughout Friday morning and opened the intersection just before 2 p.m. “This investigation will remain active as investigators determine the cause of the crash and if charges will be filed,” Gurule said in a press release.
Garcia said counselors were going to be at Gonzales Community School until next week to support students and staff.
“It’s obviously a tragic event,” Garcia said. “It’s going to take a while for them to truly process what has happened.”
