PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A man has been charged in the death of his 6-year-old stepson in southwest Philadelphia.

Police said 39-year-old Michael Williams is charged with murder and child endangerment in the death of 6-year-old Travon Register.

Police responded shortly before 7:30 p.m. Thursday to the child's home, where the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lt. John Walker of Southwest Detectives said Williams told police that the boy, who was hearing impaired, slipped on the kitchen floor and injured his head, and he later found the child gasping for air. The boy's mother was at work at the time.

The medical examiner ruled the death a homicide.

A listed number for Williams couldn't be found; it was unclear whether he had an attorney.
