Twelve-year-old Jennifer Capriati beat Meredith Geiger of Oklahom
MIAMI (AP) _ Twelve-year-old Jennifer Capriati beat Meredith Geiger of Oklahoma City 6-0, 6-4 to become the youngest winner ever in the Girls 16 division of the Easter Bowl junior tennis tournament Friday.
Capriati, of Lauderhill, Fla., turned 12 three days ago, making her the youngest winner in the division in the 21-year history of the annual tournament at the Doral Country Club.
″I know I can play with these players,″ said the 5-foot-2 Capriati. ″I feel just as big as they are.″
The eighth seed controlled the opening set, which took just 29 minutes. But Geiger, 15, rebounded in the second set before Capriati rallied.
Top seeds were upset in the day’s other finals.
Second-seed Vincent Spadea of Boca Raton, Fla., defeated Brian Dunn of Brandon, Fla., 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 in the Boys 14 division, and sixth-seed Sandra Cacic of Bradenton, Fla., defeated Anne Mall of Libertyville, Ill., 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the Girls 14 division.
The Boys 18 final Saturday will be an expected matchup between the top- seed, defending champion Jonathan Stark of Medford, Ore., and second-seed David DiLucia of Norristown, Pa.
