Blue Jays’ Halladay Sent to Minors
TORONTO (AP) _ Roy Halladay was demoted to the minor leagues Friday by the Toronto Blue Jays.
The right-hander was moved to the bullpen after the Blue Jays acquired Esteban Loaiza from Texas two weeks ago. With Steve Trachsel, acquired on Monday from Tampa Bay, making his Toronto debut on Friday night, the Blue Jays needed to clear a roster spot.
Halladay was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse for the second time this season. The 23 year-old right-hander struggled since his June 23 recall and is 4-7 with a 10.63 ERA.
``This gives him the opportunity to pitch every five days,″ Toronto general manager Gord Ash said.
Trachsel’s arrival also led to the demotion of struggling right-hander Chris Carpenter to the bullpen. Carpenter is 7-10 with a 6.99 ERA.
Halladay, Carpenter and Kelvim Escobar once were considered future aces, but all have struggled this season. Escobar is 7-11 with a 5.06 ERA.
