What the Ohio 12th Congressional District special election results mean for the midterms -- Ohio Matters recap with Rich Exner

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The 12th Congressional District special election isn’t officially in the books just yet, but barring any surprises, Republican Troy Balderson eked out a slim win over Democrat Danny O’Connor in the heavily GOP district.

The election continued a trend that’s seen Democrats overperform in reliably Republican districts. So what’s that mean for Ohio in the general election?

This week on the Ohio Matters podcast, cleveland.com data guru Rich Exner returned to break down the race with political reporters Andrew Tobias and Seth Richardson. Exner provided precinct-level analysis to show where Democrats made the most gains and where each party needs to improve to hold the seat.

Ohio Matters is the weekly politics podcast from cleveland.com. Every Friday, Tobias, Richardson and Mary Kilpatrick sit down with political figures from around the state for in-depth interviews and discussions.

Previous episodes can be found here and include Democratic gubernatorial nominee Richard Cordray, Republican gubernatorial nominee Mike DeWine and Democratic congressional hopeful Aftab Pureval. Ohio Matters has also released special episodes on the 10-year anniversary of the Cuyahoga County corruption scandal and on how the “Year of the Woman” will play in Ohio.
