Stoystown woman killed when SUV strikes tree
A Stoystown woman was fatally injured Wednesday night when her car struck a tree off Front Street in Jenner Township, according to state police.
Joan Kaltenbaugh, 79, was traveling south on Front Street at approximately 30 mph when she veered off the left side of the road, crossed the oncoming lane and struck a tree off the east side of the road, police said.
Kaltenbaugh sustained fatal injuries as a result of the accident, police said. Somerset County Coroner Wallace Miller said the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the chest.
The Boswell and Acosta volunteer fire departments and Boswell ambulance service responded, according to Somerset County Control.
The vehicle, a small SUV, had heavy front-end damage, police said. The vehicle was towed from the scene of the accident, police said.
Penn Avenue was closed for a period Wednesday night between Oak Crest Drive and Golf Course Road in Jenner Township because of the crash. The cause of the crash is undetermined and is under investigation, police said.
