Moderate earthquake hits northern Chile; no damage

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — A magnitude-5.6 earthquake hit northern Chile on Saturday, but there were no reports of damage.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the 1:36 p.m. (1636 GMT; 2:36 p.m. EST) quake was centered 30 miles (49 kilometers) northeast of Calama and 67 miles (112 kilometers) below the surface.

Chile’s national emergency office said it had no reports of damage or disruption of services.
