Nordiques 2, Canadiens 1
MONTREAL (AP) _ Mark Kumpel scored at 12:23 of overtime to lift the Quebec Nordiqus to a 2-1 victory over the Montreal Canadiens in the opening game of the National Hockey League best-of-seven Adams Division final Thursday night.
Kumpel took a pass from Michel Goulet and snapped a shot from the right -wing boards that handcuffed goalie Steve Penney.
Game 2 of the series beteen the archrivals will be Sunday
Brent Ashton gave the Nordiques a 1-0 lead shortly before the midway mark of the first period. Just 2:22 later, the Canadiens’ Lucien DeBlois erased that lead with his first goal of the playoffs.
Ashton had given Quebec a 1-0 lead at 9:38 when he slapped a shot through Penney’s legs from just inside the Montreal blue line.
But Montreal retaliated on its first shot, at 11:50 when DeB-lois rammed a pass from Mats Naslund past goalie Gosselin.
The Nordiques held a wide offensive advantage throughout, outshooting Montreal 25-16 through three periods. Penney stopped them repeatedly.
The Montreal netminder’s best save of the third period came during a penalty to Petr Svoboda in the second minute. He gloved a Goulet shot, one of several dangerous chances Goulet had.
Gosselin was equally sharp in goal for Quebec on the infrequent occasions he had to be. One of them came when Serge Boisvert won a faceoff deep in the Quebec zone with 10 seconds left in regulation time and fired a low backhander on net. Gosselin split to kick it out.
Unlike most Quebec-Montreal confrontations, often fight-filled affairs, there was little rough play and no fights.
Chris Chelios was a surprise starter for the Canadiens. He missed Game 5 of the Boston-Montreal series after suffering a sprained right knee and wasn’t expected back before Game 2 of the divisional final.
