Three U.S. Soldiers Killed in Car Accident
VICENZA, Italy (AP) _ Three U.S. Army paratroopers died when their car went off a bridge and landed upside down in a river, the Army said Saturday.
A fourth paratrooper, Spec. Jose Martinez of Houston, was not injured, said an Army spokesman, Lt. Col. Frank E. Feild.
Feild, spokesman for the Southern European Task Force in the northern city of Vicenza, said the Army would withheld the names of the dead.
He said the accident occurred midnight Friday in downtown Vicenza when the off-duty officers’ car crashed through the railing of a one-lane bridge.
″Initial reports indicate that the three soldiers drowned,″ Feild said, adding that an autopsy would be performed Monday.
The Army will conduct an investigation into the accident, he said.
All four soldiers were assigned to the Combat Support Company of the 3rd Batallion, 325th Regiment, in Vicenza.
