FLORISSANT, Mo. (AP) — Robert Lowery Sr., a longtime police chief and mayor in the St. Louis suburb of Florissant, has died.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Lowery died Monday at a hospital, a day after he fell at his home. He was 79.

Lowery spent more than 50 years working for the city of Florissant, starting as a police officer. He served as police chief for 22 years, and was instrumental in formation of the Major Case Squad. He later served 10 years as mayor of the city of 52,000 residents.
