Carrol K. Gunderson, 96, of Sioux City, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2018.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at First Lutheran Church. Burial will be at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel. Online condolences may be directed to meyerbroschapels.com.

Carrol was born Dec. 24, 1921, in Union County, S.D., to Alfred and Hannah (Knudson) Gunderson. He farmed in Union County.

He married Marie Lundgren on Aug. 8, 1941, in Ponca, Neb. He was in the United States Army stationed in India. He moved to Sioux City where he worked for Lane’s Bottling for 25 years.

He was past president of First Lutheran and worked for the church as custodian. He rebuilt cars for many years.

He was a kind-hearted person who will be greatly missed. He loved to spend time with his family and friends, playing Skipbo with his sister, Gloria and friends.

Carrol is survived by his daughter, Jane (Ed) Groendyk of North Sioux City, S.D.; his sons, James (Elaine) Gunderson of Denison, Iowa, and Roger Gunderson of Ventura, Calif.; four grandchildren, Leisa Fox, Greg Gunderson, Stephanie Debauche and Stacy Geesaman; nine great-grandchildren; stepdaughters, Sharon Shook and Sandy Larson; stepsons, Doug Sogn and Ron Sogn; several stepgrandchildren and great-stepgrandchildren; sister, Gloria Lundgren; sisters-in-law, Doris (Ernie) Petty and LaVonne Lundgren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marie, and his second wife, Vivian; three brothers; two sisters; and a stepdaughter, Wanda.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Care Initiatives Hospice.
