Stetson 85, West Florida 65
DELAND, Fla. (AP) _ Senior Kerry Blackshear recorded his 10th double-double with 23 points plus a career-high 15 rebounds and Jason Alexander added 23 points, leading Stetson to a 85-65 win over West Florida Saturday.
The pair, who both earned first team All-Trans America Conference honors last season and currently account for 60 percent of the Stetson Hatters’ scoring, combined on 18-31 shooting from the floor. Blackshear finished the first half with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
West Florida (3-5) were led by Kelcey Scott’s 22 points. Anthony Russell added 16 points and 12 rebounds.
A pair of Alexander free throws helped Stetson (3-3) pull away from a five-point 26-21 lead with an 18-3 run late in the first half to establish a 44-24 edge with 1:52 to play. The West Florida Argonauts closed the half with a 9-4 spurt to trail 48-33 at intermission.
The Hatters converted a season-high 19-of-31 field goals in the first 20 minutes.
In the second half, Stetson built its lead to 25 on three occasions, the last with 3:18 remaining when Ryan Gladieux’s three-pointer gave the Hatters an 83-58 cushion. West Florida never threatened, closing only to a 13-point deficit when Scott’s short jumper pulled the Argonauts to within 48-35 with 19:24 left.
Gladieux had his second consecutive double-digit offensive performance with 13 points.
