TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) _ Brian Cox went 6-for-6, including a grand slam that highlighted a 10-run third inning, as Florida State rolled past Delaware 27-6 Friday in the NCAA Atlantic II Regional.

Cox, who drove home five runs, tied school and regional records with his six-hit performance. The Seminoles (51-18) had 21 hits, including six homers that gave them nine for the regional.

Florida State’s 27 runs were its most in 184 NCAA postseason games. The 10-run third inning tied a season high.

Delaware ended its season 43-10.

Auburn 3, Liberty 2

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) _ Todd Faulkner scored the winning run on an error by third baseman Jason Benham as Auburn (43-17) beat Liberty (32-29) to remain alive in the Atlantic II Regional.

Faulkner singled, was sacrificed to second and sprinted home when Chad Wandall’s grounder scooted between Benham’s legs. Benham then grounded out with the bases loaded to end the game.

Oklahoma 9, Rutgers 7

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) _ Brian Shackelford singled home two runs to spark a four-run rally in the sixth inning for Oklahoma (42-18) in the NCAA Atlantic II Regional.

The Scarlet Knights (33-15) took a 5-2 lead in the third inning on a three-run homer by Pete Zoccolillo. But it didn’t hold up at Oklahoma scored twice in the fifth and surged ahead in the sixth.


Atlantic I

North Carolina 6, Miami 5

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) _ Jarrett Shearin, who had four hits, singled home Brian Roberts with the winning in the ninth inning as North Carolina (40-22) upset top-ranked Miami (47-10) at the NCAA Atlantic I Regional.

The win extended the tenure of Tar Heels coach Mike Roberts, whose firing takes effect at the end of the season. The Hurricanes will have to win twice Saturday in order to remain alive in the double-elimination tournament. Miami has advanced to the College World Series in each of coach Jim Morris’ four seasons.

Florida International 13, Bowling Green 7

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) _ Louie Fernandez, Jeff Rodriguez and Sean Mahoney each homered in a six-run sixth inning as Florida International ousted Bowling Green from the Atlantic I Regional.

Fernandez went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and four RBIs as the Golden Panthers (41-23) rallied from a 6-0 deficit, also getting six runs in the seventh. Bowling Green (34-21) gave up 12 homers in the tournament.

South Carolina 9, Texas Tech 8

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) _ Ryan Bordenick stunned Texas Tech (44-19) with a ninth-inning grand slam, giving South Carolina (44-16) a dramatic victory at the NCAA Atlantic I Regional.

Texas Tech led 8-2 after seven innings before the Gamecocks rallied with three runs in the eighth and Bordenick’s slam, setting off a jubilant celebration at home plate.



Citadel 5, Fordham 1

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) _ Aaron Haigler’s run-scoring, two-out single and a three-run homer by Kevin Durham highlighted a four-run eighth-inning as The Citadel (37-23) defeated eliminated Fordham (27-20).

Brian Wiley struck out 10 in six innings to tie the Citadel single-season record of 159. He led the nation in strikeouts per nine innings (14.02) entering the tournament and has struck out 10 or more batters in five straight starts. Reliever Tom Martin pitched three scoreless innings to earn the victory.

Virginia Commonwealth 14, Southern Cal 4

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) _ Virginia Commonwealth shortstop Brandon Inge hit a pair of two-run homers and Southern Cal coach Mike Gillespie was ejected in the third inning as the Rams (45-14) upset the top-seeded Trojans (41-16) in the NCAA East Regional.

VCU was 13-0 by the seventh inning. Inge drove in four runs, Justin Martin added three RBIs on three hits, and Ian Caballero had two doubles and two singles as every VCU starter had at least one hit and one run scored.

South Alabama 2, Clemson 1, 16 innings

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) _ Reliever Scott Clackum walked South Alabama’s Vinnie Hernandez to force in the winning run in the 16th inning in the NCAA East Regional. Justin Carter picked up the win for the Jaguars (41-17), who tied the game in the bottom of the eighth on a single by pinch-hitter Randy McBride, a relief pitcher who had only eight at-bats all season.

The Tigers (43-15) had scoring chances in the 12th, 14th, and 16th innings.


South I

Illinois 13, Monmouth 2

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) _ One day after giving up a game-winning grand slam, Cody Salter pitched a complete game as Illinois (40-20) beat Monmouth (30-21) to stay alive in the South I regional.

Salter (7-5) gave up a run in the first two innings, but just six hits after that for his fourth complete game of the season.

T.J. Jackson hit a three-run homer in the first inning, and the Illini built a 9-2 in the fourth.

Baylor 10, Florida 5

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) _ Jon Topolski’s three-run homer capped a six-run sixth inning for Baylor (41-19-1) against top seed Florida (43-16) in the NCAA South I Regional.

Jason Jennings (11-4) pitched his sixth complete game for the Bears, who blew a 9-0 lead against Richmond in the first round. Jeremy Dodson had four hits for Baylor.

Wake Forest 6, Richmond 5

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) _ Will Rikard hit a two-run homer, scored the go-ahead run and drove home an insurance run as Wake Forest (43-21) beat Richmond (41-16-1) in the NCAA South I Regional.

The Demon Deacons, making their first NCAA tournament appearance in 21 years, fell behind 4-1. Rikard drew them closer with a two-run shot off Mike Dwyer (8-5) in the sixth. Two innings later, Danny Borrell scored on Corey Slavik’s single to tie the game, and Rikard came in on a sacrifice fly by Sonny Chiou. Rikard added an RBI single in the top of the ninth.


South II

LSU 15, SW Louisiana 6

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) _ Top-seeded LSU (44-17) hit five home runs for the second consecutive game to oust Southwestern Louisiana (39-22) in the NCAA South II Regional.

The Tigers, seeking their third straight national championship, got homers from Cedrick Harris, Danny Higgins, Trey McClure, Eddy Furniss and Brad Cresse to key a 19-hit attack. A six-run sixth broke open the game.

Harvard 6, Nicholls St. 5, 10 innings

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) _ Hal Carey had three hits, including a tie-breaking double in the top of the 10th for Harvard (35-11) against Nicholls State in the NCAA South II Regional.

Nicholls State (38-34), the only team in the NCAA tournament field with a below-.500 record, rallied from a 3-0 deficit with a run in the eighth and two in the ninth to force extra innings, but Harvard answered in the 10th.

Cal State Fullerton 10, Tulane 6

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) _ Cal State Fullerton used a three-run homer by Aaron Rowand and four Tulane errors for the victory in the NCAA South II Regional. The Titans (46-15) advanced to a Saturday meeting with two-time defending national champion LSU.

Fullerton broke a 1-1 tie with five unearned runs in the bottom of the second. Tulane (48-14) got back in the game in the top of the fifth on Chad Sutter’s grand slam, but Fullerton built the lead back to 10-5 an inning later on Rowand’s homer.



Georgia Tech 14, SE Missouri St. 5

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) _ Stephen Donaghey hit two home runs to lead Georgia Tech (39-21) over Southeast Missouri State (32-24) in the second round of the Midwest Regional.

Ryan Brooks and Jay Hood hit three-run homers for Georgia Tech. Jason Swearingen (7-6) gave up seven earned runs in 2 1-3 innings as the Indians were eliminated.

Arkansas 3, Wichita State 2, 11 innings

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) _ Rodney Dye’s leadoff home run in the bottom of the 11th inning lifted Arkansas (38-20) to an upset victory over Wichita State, the top seed in the NCAA Midwest Regional.

Wichita State (56-6), the nation’s top-scoring team with over 12 runs a game, struggled with the off-speed pitching of Arkansas starter Mike Moriarity. He struck out nine and gave up seven hits in 10 innings before giving way to Rob Quarnstrom, who earned the victory with one inning of relief.

Oklahoma State 13, Arizona State 8

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) _ Billy Gastarino had four hits and scored three runs for Oklahoma State in the NCAA Midwest Regional. Oklahoma State (40-19) led 12-0 after six innings, only to see the Sun Devils (35-22) threaten late in the game.

The Cowboys had a six-run sixth inning, but the Sun Devils scored five runs in the seventh, including Greg Halvorson’s three-run homer. Mikel Moreno hit a two-run homer in the ninth.



Oral Roberts 20, North Carolina Charlotte 13

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) _ Brian Dinsmore hit a three-run homer and Mike Hill had a two-run shot as Oral Roberts scored 12 runs with two outs in the eighth inning to knock off NC Charlotte in the Central Regional playoffs.

Oral Roberts (45-19) started the eighth trailing 13-8 after UNC-Charlotte (43-19) scored six runs on one hit and five walks. But Eric Vandeventer had a two-run double, and Bryan Gann’s long fly to center field was dropped by Vinnie Diaco allowing two more runs to score.

Paul Wells hit a two-run double in his second at-bat in the inning to put Oral Roberts ahead for good, 15-13. Dinsmore and Hill followed with their homers.

Washington 20, Rice 11

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) _ Washington hit four homers, including a grand slam by Nick Stefonick in the five-run fifth inning, leading the Huskies (40-16) over top-seeded Rice (46-16) in the second round of the NCAA Central Region.

Stefonick led Washington’s attack with seven RBIs as the Huskies avoided elimination. Ten Washington batters were hit by a pitch, an NCAA record.

Texas A&M 4, Mississippi State 3

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) _ Ryan Rupe recovered from a slow start to pitch eight strong innings as Texas A&M (45-18) rallied over Mississippi State (38-21) in the NCAA Central Region.

Tied 3-3 after six innings, the Aggies edged ahead with two outs in the seventh. Steve Scarborough singled, went to second on a single by John Scheschuk and scored on Daylan Holt’s single.



Stanford 19, Minnesota 1

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) _ Joe Borchard hit two home runs and two doubles to lead a season-high 23-hit attack as Stanford (42-13-1) beat Minnesota (45-15).

Jody Gerut and John Gall also had four hits and Edmund Muth hit a three-run homer for the top-seeded Cardinal, which broke a five-game losing streak and scored its most-ever runs in a postseason game.

Minnesota was eliminated partly because it committed a season-high six errors Friday.

Long Beach State 19, Loyola Marymount 9

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) _ Paul Day hit two home runs and drove in four runs as Long Beach State (39-21-1) beat Loyola Marymount (34-22-1) in the NCAA West Regional.

Justin Hall and Terrnel Sledge also homered and Darren Merrill (6-0) pitched 4 1-3 innings of one-run relief.

Long Beach State scored nine runs in the second inning. Jason Yount drove in three runs during the inning with two singles.

North Carolina State 13, Alabama 10

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) _ Todd DeMakes’ two-run single brought home the go-ahead runs as North Carolina State scored 10 runs in the bottom of the eighth inning in the NCAA West Regional.

North Carolina State (41-21) parlayed four hits, six walks and an error by Alabama (44-17) in the eighth to wipe out a 10-3 deficit. DeMakes had doubled in a run earlier in the inning.

Jayson Cox went 4 for 5 with two home runs and four runs batted in for Alabama. G.W. Keller also homered and singled twice, extending his hitting streak to 22 games for the Crimson Tide.
