Clemson 90, Georgia Tech 81
ATLANTA (AP) _ Vincent Hamilton scored 27 points as Clemson upset ninth-ranked Georgia Tech 90-81 Tuesday night in an Atlantic Coast Conference basketball game.
Hamilton contributed eight of his points during a seven-minute stretch of the second half when Tech staged a torrid comeback from a 17-point deficit that once got the Yellow Jackets within three before the Tigers pulled away again.
It was the seventh straight victory for the Tigers, 9-2, who were playing in their conference opener.
Tech, 10-3, lost its second straight and fell to 1-2 in the ACC.
The Tigers broke a 28-28 tie on a three-point play by Raymond Jones with 4:12 left in the first half and never trailed.
Clemson used 9-1 and 6-1 runs in the closing minutes of the half to take a 43-36 lead at intermission and then showed the Yellow Jackets they were in for trouble at the start of the second half.
Horace Grant scored the first five points of the second half and Glen McCants added another basket to complete a 7-0 run that left the Tigers in front 50-36 after only 1:13 had elapsed.
Bruce Dalrymple, who led Georgia Tech’s comeback by scoring 12 points in just over six minutes, hit a 16-foot jumper with 2:38 remaining that cut the lead to 80-77.
Grant came back with a layup and Grayson Marshall connected on four free throws and a layup to give the Tigers an insurmountable lead in the final minute.
Grant had 17 for the Tigers and Dalrymple led Georgia Tech with 24, with freshman Duane Ferrell adding 21.
