Ft. Hays St. 95, Belmont Abbey 63
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) _ Mark Harris scored 24 points and Ronnie Thompkins added 21 to lead sixth- seeded Fort Hays State of Kansas to a 95-63 thrashing of Belmont Abbey of North Carolina in the first round of the NAIA basketball tournament Wednesday night.
The Tigers, 28-4, put the game away early in the first half by scoring 15 straight points to take a 15-2 lead with 14:58 left. During that stretch, Thompkins scored five points, including a 3-point shot.
With 10:03 left in the first half, the Crusaders, 22-9, cut the lead to 20-11 on a basket by Brent Turner. But Belmont Abbey, which was led by Kevin Beamer’s 14 points, never got closer.
Fort Hays State then exploded to a 51-30 lead with 16:03 left in the second half on a basket by Brent Buller, who scored 12 points, and continued to build their lead.
