Early morning fire likely started in home’s utility room

An early-Monday morning fire that destroyed a in rural northeast Rochester home likely started in a basement utility room, according to the the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office.

Firefighters from Elgin, Plainview, Rochester and Oronoco were called to the home, in the 8100 block of 40th Avenue Northeast, at 1:20 a.m. Monday for a report of a residential house fire, Sgt. Kirby Long said.

The home’s three adult occupants, Roy, Debra and Christopher Haney, were able to evacuate the house before emergency responders arrived. They were also the ones who reported the fire, according to Long.

Long said one of the residents noticed smoke coming out of the utility room and when they opened the door, saw flames near the furnace and water heater.

The home and attached garage are considered a total loss. The State Fire Marshal is still investigating the cause of the fire. The Red Cross was called to assist the family.
