Tour de France Stage Win Annulled
MAUBEUGE, France (AP) _ Italian sprinter Mario Cipollini achieved a rare feat of a hat trick of straight Tour de France stage wins Friday, after a jury annulled Belgian Tom Steel’s victory for his rough tactics.
The jury announced its decision shortly after Steel’s victory had been officially announced.
Steels was judged to have impeded fellow rider Jan Svorada when he pushed him seconds ahead of the finish line. He then appeared to veer into Cipollini.
It was the first time a racer has won three straight stages at the Tour de France since Italian Gino Bartali in 1948.
Steels, seeking his third victory of the week, had narrowly edged out Cipollini, and crossed the finishing lines with arms aloft.
