Compaq Announces New South African Subsidiary
HOUSTON (AP) _ Compaq Computer Corp. said Tuesday it has formed a new subsidiary in Johannesburg, South Africa, called Compaq Computer (Pty) Ltd.
The subsidiary is No. 32 worldwide for Compaq. It will serve Southern Africa, including Angola, Botswana, Mauritius, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South African, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
″Since Compaq re-entered the South Africa market in 1991, we have experienced solid and consistent acceptance of Compaq products by our customers,″ Zelimir Ilic, managing director of Compaq’s business development group, said in a news release.
The new subsidiary will expand Compaq’s technical, sales and marketing support, Ilic said. The company also said it intends to establish training and support facilities.
In addition, the new subsidiary will help Compaq maintain closer relationships with the seven members making up its regional dealer network, which provide distribution and systems reseller capability.
Houston-based Compaq is a leading personal computer maker.
