Louisiana sheriff elected in 1985 not seeking reelection
HOUMA, La. (AP) — A Louisiana sheriff first elected in 1985 says he won’t seek his ninth election at the end of his term in June 2020.
The Courier of Houma reports that Terrebonne Parish Sheriff Jerry Larpenter announced he won’t seek reelection this year. Larpenter said in a letter Saturday that he wants to spend time with family.
Larpenter says he started as a patrolman and worked his way through the ranks up to sheriff. He says he moved his office forward with a full-time K-9 team, body cameras and bulletproof vests for officers.
Larpenter was sheriff for 21 years before deciding not to run again in 2007. He was elected again after the gap in 2011 and 2015.
Three people have announced intentions to succeed Larpenter. The primary election is Oct. 12.
