Arson Kills Six South Africans

October 10, 2000

MELMOTH, South Africa (AP) _ Six people, including a woman locals accused of being a witch, were killed when five men set their home on fire, police said Tuesday.

The attack in a rural part of the eastern Kwa-Zulu Natal province occurred Sunday, but local residents didn’t tell police until Tuesday, the South African Press Association reported. Four other houses were also torched.

The victims included three children, ages 3, 6 and 7.

Residents in the remote village said the oldest victim, a 65-year-old woman, had long been accused of being a witch, but they were not sure if that had motivated the attack, police said.

Police had not yet investigated the fire scene because the village is inaccessible by vehicle.
