WASHINGTON (AP) _ Joe Murphy, the 15-year veteran right wing who had one goal in 14 games for the Washington Capitals, was assigned to Lowell of the American Hockey League on Saturday.
Murphy, 33, cleared waivers Saturday. Washington claimed him off waivers from Boston in February. He also has played for Detroit, Edmonton, Chicago, St. Louis and San Jose.
A member of Edmonton’s 1990 Stanley Cup championship team, Murphy had career highs of 35 goals and 47 assists in 1991-92.
Early Thursday in New York, Murphy was cut on his face and neck when he was hit with a glass at a Manhattan club. Police said Murphy was struck by a man who apparently was upset that the hockey player was talking to a woman.
