Police: Man shot by officer after approaching with hammer

WILSON, N.C. (AP) — Police in North Carolina say a man was shot by an officer after he approached him and another officer with a hammer.

Wilson police Sgt. Steve Stroud told news outlets the officers were working on reports in the parking lot of a church early Tuesday when they were approached by a man, who assault one of them. Stroud said the man then came at the officers with a hammer.

Stroud said the officer who was assaulted fired his weapon, hitting the man in the shoulder. He was taken to a hospital in Greenville for treatment and released. Stroud said the officer was injured but didn’t receive any treatment.

The State Bureau of Investigation is looking into the shooting. The officer is on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
