Firefighter Rescues Boy Who Fell Through Ice
NASHUA, N.H. (AP) _ A 9-year-old boy who took a short cut across an ice-covered pond and fell through was expected to return to school Monday following his rescue from icy waters.
Shawn Goodwin was pulled from Sandy Pond by firefighter Mark Proulx on Thursday.
Goodwin and some friends were walking home from school when he cut across the pond, authorities said. About 30 feet from shore, Goodwin plunged through thin ice into water about five feet deep.
While his friends shouted encouragement, passerby Barbara McCarty said she shouted to a woman on a porch to call police.
″I saw a boy walking on the ice,″ she said. ″When I looked again, he had gone through.″
Proulx arrived within minutes. He tied a rope around his waist and gave the other end to another firefighter, and he inched on his belly toward Goodwin. About half way there, Proulx fell through, but was able to regain his footing in chest-deep water.
Proulx waded to Goodwin and brought him ashore. Goodwin was treated at a hospital for exposure and released.
