Carroll O’Connor Shows Up at Trial of Accused Drug Dealer

January 11, 1996

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) _ Actor Carroll O’Connor fulfilled a promise and showed up at the trial of the man he says supplied drugs to his son, who committed suicide last March.

``My family has been ruined,″ said O’Connor, who made a televised pledge to see Harry Thomas Perzigian prosecuted.

``I’d like other people who know these kind of reptiles on the street to tell the police about them,″ O’Connor said Wednesday. ``And don’t be so sure you won’t get satisfaction.″

Hugh O’Connor killed himself last March. Afterward, the actor said drugs were a factor and led police to Perzigian, who is charged with one count of possessing cocaine for the purpose of sale. If convicted, he faces up to five years and eight months in prison.

Kevin McConnell, a close friend of Hugh O’Connor, testified Wednesday that he took him to Perzigian’s apartment about 15 times in the six years before the suicide.

McConnell said they usually stopped at an automatic cash machine on the way and O’Connor usually seemed high when he left.

O’Connor’s cousin Matthew O’Connor and a friend, Hadwig Schneck, said they made similar trips to the condominium with Hugh O’Connor.
