NEUMUENSTER, Germany (AP) _ Leftist demonstrators threw a hail of bottles and stones Saturday at around 500 neo-Nazis protesting the closure of their local hangout.

Police took more than 100 people into custody. No injuries were reported.

Leftists split from a simultaneous counter-demonstration in Neumuenster, just north of Hamburg, that drew some 800 people. Among them was Schleswig-Holstein state governor Heide Simonis, who appealed for vigilance against neo-Nazis and violence against foreigners.

About 1,300 police kept the leftist and neo-Nazi marchers apart, but the leftists threw stones, bottles and other objects.

Police said 101 people were taken into temporary custody and 17 charged with resisting police orders.

City officials revoked the club's license and ordered it closed Sept. 5 after determining it was being advertised on the Internet as a hangout for neo-Nazis.
