NEW YORK (AP) _ The New York Yankees acquired 20-game winner Esteban Loaiza from the Chicago White Sox for Jose Contreras and cash on Saturday.

The right-handed Loaiza gives the Yankees some stability on an aging staff that has struggled with injuries and ineffectiveness at time this season. New York initially tried to make a trade for Arizona's Randy Johnson but the Diamondbacks seemed reluctant to make an offer.

Loaiza is 9-5 with a 4.86 ERA in 21 starts and made his second straight All-Star appearance. Last season for the White Sox, he went 21-9 with a 2. 90 ERA and was runnerup to Roy Halladay in the CY Young Award voting.

Loaiza signed a two-year deal with Chicago after the 2002 season.

Contreras was wildly inconsistent for New York since signing a $32 million, four-year contract after defecting from Cuba in October 2002.

He was hit hard in his last two starts and is 8-5 with a 5.64 ERA in 18 games this season. Overall, the right-hander is 15-7 with a 4.64 ERA for New York. He has 154 strikeouts in 36 games _ 27 starts.
