Illinois Recruit Injured In Boxing Match
SAN DIEGO (AP) _ A Marine Corps recruit was in serious condition Monday after being injured during a boxing exercise, military authorities said.
Pvt. Paul Resce, 18, of Romeoville, Ill., was hurt Sunday during a three- round boxing match with another recruit, said Jerry Broeckert, spokesman for the Marine Corps Recruit Depot.
Both recruits were novice boxers and had volunteered, Broeckert said, adding that Resce collapsed into the referee’s arms during the third round.
Resce was taken to Balboa Naval Hospital, where he underwent surgery for a head injury.
Both recruits were wearing the required safety equipment, Broeckert said.
