Mini-roundabout proposed to improve safety at dangerous Benson intersection

November 13, 2018

A Johnston County town is getting its first mini-roundabout after dozens of crashes have been reported at a busy intersection.

U.S. Highway 301, or Wall Street, crosses N.C. Highway 50, also known as Main Street, right in the heart of downtown Benson. The big intersection has its share of problems.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation said that drivers have been involved in 56 crashes over the past 10 years, and eight of those crashes have involved injuries.

Most crashes were rear-end, left turn and T-bone collisions, and engineers said it would be safer if people would slow down when driving through that intersection.

As a solution, the DOT is proposing a mini-roundabout, which would be the first of its kind in Benson. It’s called mini because it won’t have a big effect on surrounding properties.

The design also includes pedestrian crosswalks.

The DOT will be discussing the proposed roundabout from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Benson Town Hall.

The DOT is also having a public meeting this week about widening N.C. Highway 55 from Fuquay-Varina through Angier. A meeting about that will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at Angier Baptist Church.
