Man charged with breaking into Durham home where woman fought him off
A man has been arrested after authorities said he broke into a Durham home and was found by the homeowner Thursday afternoon.
Floyd Kelly Harwell, 55, was charged with breaking and entering and assault on a female and was being held at the Durham County Jail on Friday.
Authorities said a woman had left the back door to her Pike Street home unlocked and came home to find Harwell inside at about 1 p.m. Thursday.
The woman yelled and Harwell charged at her. The pair struggled for a bit before Harwell fled without taking anything, police said.
The woman’s neighbor, Elijah Stanley, said he heard her screaming and ran outside to see the man and woman struggling in the street.
“He kind of grappled, pushed her and she was sitting on the street out in front of her house, so I ran up to her as he was running off through the woods behind both of our houses,” Stanley said.
