Protest announced ahead of Scott Presler event in Kent

April 6, 2019

KENT — Try as they might, the Kent Democratic Town Committee was unsuccessful in its attempts to have a Scott Presler event canceled in town on Saturday, and instead has invited the public to attend a protest during the event.

Presler’s event is scheduled to run from noon to 2 p.m. at the Kent Community House on North Main Street. It is meant to be an “activism class” to teach the Connecticut GOP “how to get out the vote in preparation for the 2020 presidential elections,” according to an EventBrite page. The event’s description is wrapped up with: “#Trump2020.”

Presler was previously lead activism strategist for ACT for America from February 2017 to 2018, according to his Facebook page. The Virginia Beach-based organization has been identified by the Anti-Defamation League as the biggest anti-Muslim group in the United States.

Presler’s event on Saturday was initially scheduled to be in New Milford on March 16. But because “so many people ... expressed interest in attending,” a bigger venue was found — apparently in Kent — and the date was changed.

“We have not succeeded in getting tomorrow’s Scott Presler event canceled,” said a Facebook post from the Kent Democratic Town Committee. “I know it is disappointing. But, the die is cast and we must move on.”

The post goes on to say there will be a march in protest of the Presler event, the 30th district Kent Republicans who organized the event and against extreme hate groups, including ACT for America.

The Facebook post from the Democratic Town Committee urged anyone considering to attend Saturday’s protest to consider wrapping a scarf around their head in a “hijab-like fashion” as a show of solidarity with local Muslims targeted by groups like ACT for America.

The protest is set to begin at 11:30 a.m. Those willing to march in the protest are asked to meet at the Kent Welcome Center, directly behind the Kent Station Pharmacy. From there, protesters will march through town. Parking is available behind the pharmacy, at Kent Town Hall and on Main Street.
