Review panel clears Yakima police officer for kicking teen

November 8, 2018

YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) — The Yakima police officer who pepper-sprayed and kicked a teenager while breaking up a fight has returned to regular patrol duties.

The Yakima Herald-Republic reports officer Ian Cole will not face administrative action after a use of force review board concluded his actions were reasonable.

The officer had knocked the teen to the ground at the Central Washington State Fair in September. The encounter was captured on video.

The department says the teen ignored officers’ orders, so Cole “delivered a push kick to the suspect, who fell to the ground.”

Interim police chief Gary Jones says Cole has been on desk duty since the incident, and is now returning to work in the patrol division.

Prosecutors declined last month to pursue criminal charges, saying Cole acted in a reasonable manner.
