GIRLS BASKETBALL: Cactus’ prickly defense downs Havasu
The Lake Havasu girls basketball team hung close for stretches with No. 12 Peoria Cactus, scoring in bunches, but couldn’t keep the Cobras off the free-throw line, falling 64-40 in a regional game on Tuesday night at Lake Havasu High School.
The Knights were able to force Cactus into turnovers, and got clean looks on offense to challenge the more experienced Cobras side, staying within striking distance for most of the first half.
Foul trouble start to cost the Knights just before halftime, with Cactus making a regular procession to the free-throw line, hitting 6 of 8 foul shots in the final four minutes, including two that came after a made field goal, allowing the Cobras to take a 39-19 lead into halftime.
Havasu’s Matisun Skirvin kept the game close in the third quarter, hitting two 3-pointers and another long two with her foot on the line, spurring a 10-4 run for the Knights.
The Knights went cold from the field to start the fourth quarter, however, held scoreless until hitting a pair of free throws with 2:40 to play and not hitting a field goal until 12 seconds left on a final 3 from Skirvin.
Skirvin had 22 points to lead the Knights and Saydra Pappenfus had nine points.
Havasu will play at region-leading No.6 Desert Edge on Thursday before hosting senior night on Tuesday against Deer Valley.
