White Sox Pick Agrees to Terms
CHICAGO (AP) _ Outfielder Joe Borchard, the first-round pick of the Chicago White Sox in last month’s draft and the 12th selection overall, agreed to a contract Friday.
The White Sox said his signing bonus was the largest for a first-round pick in this year’s draft and the most ever given to a White Sox pick but didn’t specify the amount.
A native of Camarillo, Calif., the 6-foot-4, 225-pound switch-hitter batted .333 with 21 home runs for Stanford this spring. He also was a quarterback on Stanford’s football team.
``We are thrilled to have reached this agreement with Joe,″ general manager Ron Schueler said. ``He is an impressive hitter and showed us a great deal of power from both sides of the plate. We continued to talk with him throughout the summer, and with football beginning in earnest soon, everyone felt it was time for the negotiations to reach a positive conclusion.″
