Fury helps Phoenix past Warriors

Hallie Fury capped off the Luther Prep softball team’s 3-spot in the second inning with a 2-run double as the Phoenix held off Lakeside Lutheran 5-4 in a Capitol North game at LPS on Friday.

Lakeside scored on an error and McKenna Lamp had a run-scoring double in the third to cut the Luther Prep (5-7, 2-7 in conference) lead to one.

After a walk and a single, Andrea Bortulin scored from second on a fielder’s choice groundout by Kristine Deisinger to push the Phoenix lead to 4-2. Another fielder’s choice scored Sarah Thede later in the inning, pushing the lead to three.

The Warriors (8-7, 5-4) scored on sacrifice flies by Ryann Burger and Olyvia Uecker that made it 5-4 Phoenix in the sixth.

Bortulin pitched a perfect seventh to close it out. The right-hander struck out two, allowed one earned and gave up seven hits to pick up the decision.

Fury was 2-for-4 and Ally Goba went 2-for-3 with a double. Ana Goelzer also doubled for Luther Prep.

Lakeside’s Olivia Krieser was 2-for-3 and Lamp had two hits.

Kylee Gnabasik struck out four, allowing five earned over six innings.

Lakeside Lutheran plays a nonconference doubleheader at Fond du Lac Winnebago Lutheran Academy today starting at 10 a.m.

Luther Prep plays at the Lomira Tournament beginning at 10 a.m. today.
