S.Car.St. 82, Morgan State 72
BALTIMORE (AP) _ Derrick Patterson scored 25 points to lead South Carolina State to an 82-72 victory over Morgan State in the quarterfinals of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament Thursday.
South Carolina had seen a 71-54 lead dwindle to 71-66 before Jamal Brown made a free throw at 1:42. Brown missed the second attempt, but Patterson tipped the shot in to record the Bulldogs’ only field goal of the final 5:15.
Patterson added 10 rebounds for South Carolina.
The win improved South Carolina State’s record to 15-12.
The Bulldogs took the lead with 14:42 left in the first half, on one of five 3-pointers from Eric Fernandez, who finished with 20 points. SC State never trailed again, and led 37-29 at halftime.
Morgan State closed to 38-33 in the opening minute of the second half, before the Bulldogs went on an 18-5 run to make it 56-38 at 12:23. Patterson had eight of those 18 points.
South Carolina maintained control until Morgan’s 12-0 spurt in the closing minutes.
Jerard Rucker scored 15 points and Damian Zellous had 13 for Morgan State, which finishes the year at 5-22.
