After-school Bible clubs planned after lawsuit over classes

August 28, 2018

PRINCETON, W.Va. (AP) — After-school Bible clubs are planned at a West Virginia school district that suspended in-school Bible classes after being sued.

Amy Belcher is a member of Mercer County’s Bible in the Schools program. She told the Bluefield Daily Telegraph that a pilot program will start this fall at a limited number of elementary schools. She said the Bible in Schools organization will oversee and fund the new clubs, which will meet at schools after classes and students would need parent permission to attend.

A judge dismissed a federal lawsuit against the district last year based on its decision to suspend elective Bible classes offered during the school day.

The Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation Inc. filed suit on behalf of two parents alleging the classes improperly entangled public schools into religious affairs.
