Bernard “Bernie” S. Wright, 95, of Manteno, passed away Wednesday (March 13, 2019) at Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee.

He was born Dec. 10, 1923, in Cortlandville, N.Y., the son of Frank and Elizabeth Hazen Wright.

Bernard worked for Sears from 1950 to 1955. He then worked for Illinois Central Railroad for about 40 years, working his way to executive director. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force and a former member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Kankakee. He was very active in the church, serving as a custodian, trustee and singing in the choir.

He enjoyed gardening, especially flowers, watching birds and listening to music. He also collected and overall enjoyed steam engines.

Surviving are two daughters, Lynda Weemhoff and Cheryl Dole, both of Manteno; a daughter-in-law, Linda Wright, of Manhattan; two sisters, Ida Young, of Florida, and Berniece Buck, of Texas; three grandchildren, Edward Weemhoff, Michelle Abbeduto and Robert Weemhoff; and two great-grandchildren, Caleb Weemhoff and Makayla Doyle; along with many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his son, Wayne Wright; his great-granddaughter, Olivia Weemhoff; and seven sliblings.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 19, until the 11 a.m. funeral service at Schreffler Funeral Homes, Bourbonnais Chapel. Burial will follow in Mound Grove Gardens of Memory in Kankakee.

Memorials may be made to the Illinois Veterans Home at Manteno.
