Tigers Place Clark on 15-Day DL
DETROIT (AP) _ Detroit Tigers first baseman Tony Clark was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a strained left rib cage.
Clark’s spot on the 25-man roster was filled by infielder Gabe Alvarez, who was recalled from Triple-A Toledo.
Clark first suffered the rib cage injury last week at Minnesota and reaggravated it Friday night during the Tigers’ 9-7 win over the New York Yankees.
The 6-7 switch-hitter is batting just .176 with four home runs and seven RBIs but had recently showed signs of shaking another of his notoriously slow starts. He was 4-for-7 in his previous two games before going hitless Friday.
Alvarez was batting .223 with eight homers and 24 RBIs at Toledo. He played 22 games with the Tigers last season with a .208 average, two home runs and four RBIs.
