Nutrition program will help senior citizens supplement their diets with fresh produce

Dede BilesMay 27, 2019

The Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program, SFMNP, is returning to Aiken County.

Its goals are to supplement the diets of low-income senior citizens with fresh, nutritious produce and to support South Carolina’s small farmers.

The seasonal U.S. Department of Agriculture grant program allows individuals 60 and older to purchase unprocessed fruits and vegetables from authorized farmers’ markets, roadside stands and community-supported agriculture programs from May through Oct. 15.

Those eligible to participate will receive $25 in the form of five checks of $5 each to spend at authorized locations. Checks are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Vouchers will be issued at the following locations:

• H. Odell Weeks Activities Center, 1700 Whiskey Road in Aiken, from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on June 17 and 19.

• Langley Community Center, 2710 Augusta Road in Langley, from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on June 18.

• Listine Gunter Courtney Senior Center, 49 Roy Street in Wagener, from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on June 25.

• Roland Smith Senior Center, 109 Charles Street in Jackson, from 9 a.m. to noon on June 26.

Seniors who attend a distribution event will be required to complete an application, provide proof of identity and residency in Aiken County and provide information about household income.

Individuals wishing to apply for a homebound senior will be required to provide a statement from the senior granting permission to submit an application on his or her behalf.

Proof of identity and proof of income for the homebound senior also will have to be presented at the time of application.

SFMNP is administered by the South Carolina Department of Social Services and county Agencies on Aging.
