Lt. Patrick Lynch said his department was assisted in the investigation by members of the Orange and Woodbridge Police Department Accident Reconstruction teams and the Connecticut State Police Crash Analysis and Reconstruction squad.

During the investigation police learned that the car Mercer was driving had been listed as a salvage vehicle and did not pass the inspection to be registered in Connecticut. So instead Mercer registered the car in Texas and drove it on state roads.
